I have a great love for taking supplements, you may think I am very odd for saying that, but I seem to get a bit of a buzz about knowing that I am added nutritional benefit to my body in an easy and convenient way. Below are a list of some of the best supplements you can be taking for weight loss and general health and wellbeing.
Green Tea Extract – will increase your metabolism and help with weight loss. It is loaded with catechins (incl. EGCG to promote fat loss) which will help enhance antioxidant defences as well as assisting in detoxification, while maintaining skin health, liver and your digestive tract.
Whey Protein – a great source of protein which can be added to your breakfast or consumed in a smoothie, whey powder helps your body build muscle and burn fat while increasing your metabolism by up to 25%. Who wouldn’t want to add this to their diet?
Multivitamin – In conjunction with a balanced diet taking a multi vitamin once a day well help you fill your nutritional requirements, especially if you are not getting enough fruit and vegetables. If you are not getting enough of the right nutrients you can actually stop weight loss. When looking for a multi vitamin make sure it contains B vitamins, folic acid, vitamin E, Glutamine, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc etc. All good multivitamins will contain these ingredients along with many others.
Calcium – Is a great addition if your aim is weight loss and especially in supplement form as you can’t really afford the extra calories from milk or cheese. Calcium will help keep your bones and muscles healthy. The daily dosage depending on age is 1200 – 1500mg, this is an amount that you won’t get from a multivitamin.
Omega 3 & 6 – Are one of the most important supplements that you can take on a daily basis as the average person will never get the required amount of Omega 3’s from food alone. Omega 3’s (ALA) & 6’s (LA) are polyunsaturated fatty acids; these form building blocks of cellular membranes in out body. These fatty acids are required for correct development and growth in our body, as we cannot create them on our own. They can aid in the breakdown of lipolysis (fat) while at the same time helping reducing any additional fat storage.
Glutamine – is one of the body’s most abundant amino acids, as it plays a very important role in keeping your muscles functioning properly while reducing muscle deterioration. This amazing supplement drives muscle building nitrogen into the muscle cell when it is synthesised for growth, while also converting into glucose when the body needs energy. If you weren’t taking this supplement before I bet you want to now!
Coenzyme Q10 – CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant, which may increase stamina, endurance as well as brain function. While enchaining your energy production, heart function, immune function and promoting healthy ageing. CoQ10 also enhances the metabolism, giving us greater energy and endurance, and a greater ability to lose body fat, while preventing the energy decline seen in aging cells.
L- Carnitine (CLA) – is a fat burning booster, which is important if you happen to have a sluggish metabolism. Only use quality L-Carnitine for as good source as this is the key with this supplement, so do your research before purchasing.
Always speak with a nutritionist to make sure you are taking adequate supplements for your body, as sometimes you may need more of one type than another. If you start taking a new supplement and after a week you aren’t feeling great, then it might not be right for you or you may be taking too much.
Supplements are a great addition to your diet and I love them, but you still need to remember that you won’t lose fat from just taking supplements, you need to ensure you are eating a well balanced clean diet and are exercising a minimum of 3 times per week. Stay focused, be consistent and before you know it you will be feeling amazing and all your hard work will feel worthwhile.
